Business solar: why 31 December 2026 matters

Aerial view of a factory roof covered with solar panels

In July 2026 MNRE extended a one-time exemption for net-metering and open-access solar projects. Projects commissioned by 31 December 2026 do not have to use solar cells from ALMM List-II, the approved list of cell manufacturers.

What this means in practice

  • Commissioned by 31 December 2026: you can use non-DCR panels, which are made in India with imported cells and cost less.
  • Commissioned after 31 December 2026: panels must use ALMM-listed cells, which cost more.

The deadline is about commissioning, not ordering. A business rooftop needs time for design, DISCOM feasibility, supply, installation and inspection, so plan backwards from the date.

A realistic timeline

  1. Site survey and engineering pack: about 1 week
  2. Order and DISCOM application: 1–2 weeks
  3. Supply and installation: about 15 days from order confirmation
  4. Inspection, net meter and commissioning: depends on your DISCOM
